Who is Allah

Learn who Allah is in Islam — the One Creator, the Most Merciful, and the only One worthy of worship.

Allah is the One True God, the sole Creator, Owner and Lord of everything that exists. He is the God of Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon them all), and He alone deserves all worship.

In Sunni Islam, the answer to “Who is Allah?” can be summarized as follows:

  1. The One and Only God
  • Allah is absolutely One, without partner, rival, equal, son, daughter or helper.
  • He says:

“Say: He is Allah, One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (Qur’an 112:1–4)

  1. The Only One Who Deserves Worship
  • The very root of the word “Allah” in Arabic is tied to “the One who is worshipped.”
  • Islam teaches that all acts of worship — prayer, supplication, fear, hope, love of ultimate devotion, reliance — must be directed to Allah alone, not to prophets, saints, angels, idols, or any created being.
  1. The Same God of the Earlier Prophets
  • Allah is the same God worshipped by the true followers of Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them), before later distortions.
  • Arabic-speaking Jews and Christians themselves use the word “Allah” for God.
  • Islam confirms the original pure monotheism of all prophets and corrects later changes, completing the message through Muhammad (peace be upon him).
  1. Unique, Not Like His Creation
  • Allah is not a man, not a spirit in the sense of created spirits, not part of creation and not “inside” everything.
  • “There is nothing like unto Him.” (Qur’an 42:11)
  • He is above all imperfections: He does not get tired, does not sleep, does not die, is not in need of anything, while every created thing is in need of Him.
  1. Known by His Beautiful Names and Perfect Attributes
  • Allah has many Beautiful Names (al‑Asmā’ al‑Ḥusnā), such as:
  • Ar‑Raḥmān (The Most Merciful)
  • Ar‑Raḥīm (The Most Compassionate)
  • Al‑Khāliq (The Creator)
  • Al‑ʿAlīm (The All‑Knowing)
  • As‑Samīʿ (The All‑Hearing)
  • Al‑Baṣīr (The All‑Seeing)
  • “Allah! None has the right to be worshipped but He. To Him belong the Best Names.” (Qur’an 20:8)
  1. The Lord, Creator and Sustainer of All
  • He created the heavens and the earth and everything between them with wisdom and purpose.
  • He provides for every creature, guides them to what benefits them, and controls life, death, honor, humiliation, benefit and harm.
  • He says: “I did not create jinn and humans except that they worship Me.” (Qur’an 51:56)
  1. The First, the Last, the Most High, the Most Near
  • “He is the First and the Last, the Most High and the Most Near; and He is, of all things, Knowing.” (Qur’an 57:3)
  • He is close by His knowledge, hearing and seeing, and He responds to those who call upon Him sincerely.

In Islam, truly knowing who Allah is brings peace, purpose, and hope: recognizing Him as the One True God, worshipping Him alone, loving Him above all, and submitting to His perfect guidance as revealed in the Qur’an and in the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
